Becoming a Substitute
To serve as a substitute teacher in CCSD21, first, one must obtain authorization from the Regional Office of Education. For CCSD21, this is the North Cook Intermediate Service Center in Des Plaines. With that authorization in-hand, a substitute can be added to the CCSD21 Sub List after attending the mandated annual Substitute Orientation Meetings, held in August each school year.
Long-term substitutes are typically selected by school principals in conjunction with the Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources. These selections occur outside of Aesop, which is still used for recording staff absences and substitute work-days in the case of long-term assignments. For specific positions, other CCSD21 administrators assist in the hiring of long-term substitutes.
Aesop Information
Aesop, owned by Frontline Placement Technologies, is an "Automated Substitute Placement & Absence Management" system. It can be accessed by permanent District 21 staff members as well as by substitutes both online and via the telephone. Nearly all District 21 absences are recorded through this system, and nearly all absences that require substitute teacher or staff member are fulfilled through this system.
