School District 21 is closely monitoring the swine flu outbreak as it develops in Illinois. This monitoring is being completed in conjunction with various national, state, and local health agencies. The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to monitor the outbreak in an effort to protect the citizens of Illinois. We are also in contact with the Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH).
At this time the IDPH and CCDPH are recommending the general public do the following:
- Seek medical attention for symptoms including fever greater than 100 degrees, body aches, cough, sore throat, and respiratory congestion
- To prevent the spread of respiratory viral infections in general:
a. Ill persons should stay home from work or school to avoid spreading illness
b. All persons should always cough or sneeze into their sleeve or into a tissue and properly dispose of used tissues
c. All persons should wash their hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and warm water, and avoid touching their eyes, nose and mouth
Our custodial staff will give special attention to the routine surface cleaning of frequently touched surfaces throughout the school buildings. With all of us working together to make our homes and schools as sanitary as possible, we hope to see this health threat lessen in the days ahead. For further information you can access the agencies mentioned in this letter at. Also, please feel free to contact your school nurse should other questions arise.
